Why aren’t fees refunded when I refund a charge with WooCommerce Payments?

WooCommerce Payments is available to stores based in the US. Based outside the US? Request to be notified when it becomes available in your country.

When you refund a payment to a customer, the fees paid on that transaction will not be refunded to your WooCommerce Payments account. When a charge is processed, we incur costs from the card networks and payment partners with which we work. These costs are not refunded to us when the charge is refunded.

This is in line with industry standards and the policies of other leading payments service providers.

WooCommerce Payments does not charge additional fees on top of the transaction fees to process a refund. For example, we do not charge a $5 refund fee or similar.

If you do not wish for your business to absorb the transaction fees from refunds, it is possible to provide customers with a partial refund; however, your store’s refund policy should clearly state this practice. If a customer lodges a dispute for the remaining fee, you will need to provide your refund policy as evidence to win that dispute.
